Ain't What You Do, It's The Way You Do It - Non-verbal communication in action

How can you tell whether someone's smile is genuine or fake?

Ever been the first one into an empty meeting room and wondered which seat to take? Yes, it does matter.

Ever wondered why you had the right words but didn't get the business?

With so much communication being non-verbal, how we do and say things is at least as important as the actual words we use. Whether you're making a new contact, entering into a negotiation, establishing your position in a hierarchy or simply trying to get along better with colleagues, an appreciation of the importance of non-verbal communication is an essential element of the manager's toolkit.

This workshop presents a range of tools and techniques for interpreting non-verbal cues, and for ensuring that the signals we give out are appropriate and really do match their intended effect. Access to these tools will enhance attendees' influencing skills, help them to understand what's going on behind the façade, and give them an enormous advantage in 'reading' people's real intentions, motivations and concerns.

There is ample opportunity for 'role play' to try out new techniques and approaches in a safe, supportive environment, and to discuss and resolve specific issues.

The workshop is divided into three modules:

1. The Non-Verbal Vocabulary. The morning is spent deconstructing the non-verbal codes through which we communicate. These include:

  • Appearance - Like it or not, packaging does matter
  • Touch - Your handshake says a lot about you
  • Facial expressions & head movements - Let your face do the talking
  • Eyes - Tread the fine line between staring and lack of interest
  • Voice and speech - Make sure that your voice doesn't let you down
  • Posture & gesture - Gesture clusters are key to accurate interpretation
  • Space - Invade someone's space bubble at your peril!
  • Time - Time is money... or is it?

2. Putting The Package Together. The afternoon starts by looking at how the codes operate in harmony (or disharmony) to tell a complete story. The issues discussed include lies, white lies and insincerities; how to tell if someone is interested, bored or indifferent; and the non-verbal structure of power and influence.

3. Real Life Scenarios. The day ends with role plays through which participants start to put what they've learnt into practice.

This full day open workshop is held several times a year at central London locations.   We provide a comprehensive workshop manual and offer immediate post-event email and telephone support to attendees. Six hours teaching (approx.) plus lunch and tea/coffee breaks. Workshop led by Judith Perle.

Price per participant: £285 plus VAT
